മനസ്സിനു പുതുമയുള്ള വെളിച്ചം പകരുന്ന ഡിസംബറിലെ ഒരു പുലരി. എന്നത്തേയും പോലെ, മറിയാമ്മ രാവിലെ തന്നെ കർമ്മനിരതയായി. വെള്ളപ്പട്ടു പുതച്ച പുൽമേടുകളും, ഇലകൾ പൊഴിഞ്ഞ ഓക്ക് മരങ്ങളും, മാതളവും, അത്തിമരവും. ഇതിനിടയിൽ ഏഷ്യൻ പെയിന്റിന്റെ പരസ്യം പോലെ വെയിലത്തും മഴയത്തും, ഏതു മഞ്ഞിലും മസ്സിലുപിടിച്ചു നിൽക്കുന്ന ഓറഞ്ച് മരങ്ങളും. നിറയെ പച്ചിലകളും, സ്വർണത്തിൽ പൊതിഞ്ഞതുപോലെ നിറയെ കായ്കളുമായി പ്രൗഢഗംഭീരമായി തലയുയർത്തി നിൽക്കുന്ന നാരകവും. ഈ മഞ്ഞുകാലത്ത് കുഞ്ഞിക്കുരുവികൾ, അണ്ണാൻ, തുടങ്ങി സകലമാന ജീവജാലങ്ങൾക്കും ഭക്ഷണവും പാർപ്പിടവും ഒരുക്കി, അടിപതറാതെ നിൽക്കുന്ന ഈ വൃക്ഷലതാദികളൊക്കെ മറിയാമ്മയുടെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട ചങ്ങാതിമാർ തന്നെ. ഡിസംബർ.. വീടു വിട്ട് അകലെ പോയവർ തിരികെ കൂട്ടിൽ [...]

ഞങ്ങൾ എല്ലാവരും 'ചേട്ടൻ' എന്നു വിളിക്കുന്ന എന്റെ അപ്പച്ചന്റെ ജ്യേഷ്ഠസഹോദരൻ ജോസഫ്, നാട്ടുകാരുടെ സ്നേഹനിധിയായ “ഔസൊച്ചേട്ടൻ” ആയിരുന്നു. മൂന്നാം സഭയിൽ അംഗമായി, നിത്യ ബ്രഹ്മചാരിയായി, വിശുദ്ധ ജീവിതം നയിച്ച് ഇഹലോകവാസം വെടിഞ്ഞ ചേട്ടന്റെ ജീവിതം എനിക്ക് എന്നും ഒരു മാതൃകയും അത്ഭുതവുമായിരുന്നു. വിശുദ്ധിയുടെ നിറമായ വെളുത്ത വസ്ത്രങ്ങൾ മാത്രം ധരിച്ചിരുന്ന ചേട്ടന്റെ തലമുടി പോലും മഞ്ഞുകണങ്ങൾ പോലെ തൂവെള്ള ആയിരുന്നു. എന്നും ഏഴര വെളുപ്പിനുണർന്നു പ്രഭാതപ്രാർത്ഥനകൾ കഴിഞ്ഞ്, കുളിച്ചു വെളുത്ത വസ്ത്രങ്ങളണിഞ്ഞു, വലത്തെ കയ്യിൽ വലിയകൊന്തയും ഇടത്തെ കയ്യിൽ ബാലനായ എന്നെയും പിടിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് തുരുത്തിപ്പുറം പള്ളിമുറ്റത്ത് എത്തുമ്പോൾ, കപ്യാർ ലോനച്ചൻചേട്ടൻ എത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ടാവില്ല. പിന്നെ ചേട്ടന്റെ സ്ഥിരം സ്ഥലമായ പേറു [...]

ചെറുപ്പകാലത്ത്, എനിക്കു ദുഃഖവെള്ളിയാഴ്ചകൾ, ‘Good Friday’ കൾ ആയിരുന്നു! പലചരക്കു കച്ചവടക്കാരനായ എന്റെ അപ്പച്ചൻ, ഒരു മുഴുവൻ ദിവസം വീട്ടിൽ ഞങ്ങളോടൊപ്പം ചെലവഴിച്ചിരുന്ന, വർഷത്തിലെ ഏകദിവസം!! സാധാരണയായി, ആഴ്ചയിൽ ഒരുദിവസം കട അടച്ചാലും, അയൽപക്കക്കാരും മറ്റും വന്ന് അവശ്യസാധനങ്ങൾക്കായ് കാത്തുനിൽക്കുമ്പോൾ, താല്പര്യമില്ലാതെയാണെങ്കിലും, പലപ്രാവശ്യം കട തുറന്നു സാധനങ്ങൾ എടുത്തു കൊടുക്കാൻ അപ്പച്ചൻ നിർബന്ധിതനായിക്കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. ദുഃഖവെള്ളിയാഴ്ച, പക്ഷെ, ഏതോ അനന്യമായ ഔചിത്യബോധം അയല്ക്കാരിൽ വന്നു നിറയുകയാലാവാം, അന്നേ ദിവസം കട തുറക്കാൻ ആരും ആവശ്യപ്പെടാറില്ലായിരുന്നു. രാവിലെ തന്നെയുള്ള പള്ളിയിൽ പോക്കുകഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ഞങ്ങൾ മൂന്നു പെണ്മക്കളും, അപ്പച്ചനും, അമ്മയെ സഹായിക്കാൻ അടുക്കളയിലേക്കു കയറുകയായി. അന്ന് ‘ഒരുനേരം’ ആയതിനാൽ, പ്രാതൽ കഴിക്കാത്തതിന്റെ ‘ചൂളംവിളികൾ’ [...]

തിരുഹൃദയം: സോമി പുതനപ്ര അയാളുടെ ഹൃദയം സ്നേഹത്താൽ കത്തിജ്വലിച്ചു; മുള്ളും മുൾച്ചെടികളും ആ തീയിൽ കരിഞ്ഞു പോയി.. പൊടുന്നനെ, മുൾക്കാട്ടിൽ നിന്നൊരു സർപ്പം ഉയർന്നു പൊങ്ങി അയാളുടെ മാറിടത്തിൽ കൊത്തി! അവിടെ നിന്നു രക്തവും വെള്ളവുമൊഴുകി; അതു ഭൂമിയെ മുഴുവൻ നനച്ചു.. അന്നു മുതൽ, ഭൂമിയിൽ എല്ലാത്തരം സസ്യങ്ങളും കായ്കനികളും വീണ്ടുമുണ്ടായി, വയലുകൾ നൂറും അറുപതും മുപ്പതും മേനി വിളവു നല്കി.. അയാളാകട്ടെ, ഉറക്കെ വിളിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞു: "എല്ലാം പൂർത്തിയായി .."
